Over the course of six months, I tested 15 business areas. No other hired job can provide you with similar experience in negotiations, sales, attracting clients, and interacting with contractors and partners. I realized what I definitely wouldn’t do, and this helped me make informed choices in the future.

Analysis of collected data

I compiled the accumulated information into a table of three columns:

  • What is my expertise? What am I better at than most people?
  • What do I like to do? What do I do in my free time?
  • What brings me or other people money?

Each column contains 5-10 areas of activity. Some of them were different, some overlapped. I decided to consider the ideal niche to be one that is present in all columns or at least two, if one of them is “Brings money.” In my case, this direction turned out to be organizing events.

Finding a direction without competition

There are enough people willing to organize events. My goal was to find a niche where I could make the most of my skills and where there was no competition. I didn’t want to get into the information business and teach how to organize events. This is a falling market, there is too much competition here. My partner and I asked ourselves how to apply our skills, expertise and experience in different areas of the business. This is how several hypotheses were born related to the organization of online events in different industries in order to find and attract new partners, dealers, wholesale customers, franchisees, representative offices, and large customers.

Testing hypotheses

We tested each hypothesis. Over the course of three months, we organized several events in different industries. This is how we gained real experience in each of the narrow areas, understood the demand for it and estimated the labor costs. Based on this information, the final decision was made when choosing the ideal niche. Projects in each area paid off and even made a profit, but one still turned out to be better than the rest.
